What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxin  is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It was developed during the 1970s – 1980s to treat blepharospasm (spasm of the eyelids) and strabismus (squint).
In 1997 it achieved FDA approval for cosmetic use in the USA and by 2006 was granted a license by the MHRA in the UK for the treatment of frown lines. Worldwide, now more than 3 million treatments take place per year.

How does it work?

In addition to skin cell changes, collagen depletion and damage due to free radicals, wrinkles are caused by muscle contraction. For example, when you are angry or confused, you draw your eyebrows together and downwards. This causes pleating of the skin which results in frown lines.
Similarly, elevation of the eyebrows causes horizontal lines on the forehead and smiling / squinting causes crows feet around the eyes.
Botulinum toxin is injected into the target muscle and works at the neuromuscular junction by blocking the transmission of signals from the nerve ending to the muscle. This causes temporary paralysis of the treated muscle, which results in the reduction or loss of wrinkles. This effect lasts approximately 3-6 months, at which point the muscle regains it’s activity and wrinkles begin to reappear. With repeated treatments the wrinkle formation gets less due to muscle athropy and conditioning.

The Treatment

  • A few tiny injections into facial muscles using a very fine needle
  • No local anaesthetic required – discomfort is minimal
  • Takes 10 mins to perform – no downtime necessary
  • Noticable wrinkle reduction in 3-5 days
  • Results last  3 to 6 months

The Aftercare (within the first 6 hours)

  • DO NOT rub or massage the treatment areas – this may increase the risk of complications by spreading the product
  • AVOID alcohol, aspirin and ibuprofen for 24 hours which can increase the risk of bruising and swelling
  • AVOID lying flat or bending down excessively
  • AVOID very strenuous physical activity

Possible side effects or complications

  • Small area of redness at treatment site lasting 2-3 hours (common)
  • Bruising / swelling of treatment area (less common)
  • Dull heavy sensation +/- occasional headache (less common)
  • Ptosis (droop) of eyebrow or eyelid (very rare)
  • Double vision (very rare)
  • Infection (local or systemic) (rare)

General Information When Considering Botulinum Toxin injections

What Is It Used For?

The injections are used to improve the look of fine lines and superficial wrinkles of the forehead, between the brows, and crow’s feet (around eyes) caused from everyday facial expressions. Smiling, frowning or squinting can also cause wrinkles and Botulinum Toxin is very effective in these areas. If you find that the early signs of aging are becoming apparent or if your facial expressions are causing premature wrinkles to appear, then this may be for you.

How Does Botulinum Toxin Work?
It blocks the transmission of signals from nerves to the muscles, by hindering the production of the neurotransmitters (the chemical which relays the signals). When used for cosmetic purposes, this causes the muscle to relax giving it a smoother appearance, greatly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Normally, your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so they can contract and move. Botulinum Toxin injections works to block the release of those electric transmissions and, as a result, the muscle doesn’t receive the message to contract. This means that the muscles spasms or movements that cause wrinkling are stopped or greatly reduced after your treatment.
